The 2009 SWAC football season ended with Prairie View A&M University winning the championship game over East champion Alabama A&M on December 12, 2009. Although Texas Southern didn't win the conference or go to Alabama for the title game, the Tigers ended the season on a high note, winning against Southern in the final home game. They ended the season 6-5 and clinched the winning record for the first time since 2000. The Lady Tigers volleyball team reached the tournament but fell to Grambling in the semi-finals. Ashlee Cooper was named to the SWAC All-Tournament team. The soccer team had a dismal season and failed to reach the post-season which cost the head coach her job. Indoor track begins on Saturday with the Carl Lewis Invitational at the University of Houston.
SWAC play has begun for the men's and women's basketball teams. They started off the 2009-2010 season with a three game home stand for both teams against Alcorn State, Southern and Prairie View. Both teams went 4-2 on the home stand with both losses coming to rival Prairie View on January 9th. The women are in third place in SWAC while the men are in second place behind the Panthers. The next game for the Lady Tigers is on January 12 at Sam Houston State while the men are off until both teams play at Grambling on January 16, 2010. The next Tigers home game is on January 23 against Mississippi Valley State.
In other news, the H&PE Arena received upgrades which included a new parquet floor that shows the newly selected TSU Athletics logo. Other upgrades include a new scoreboard and video boards on opposite ends of the court. In addition, the TSU women's track team has a new head coach. Coach Pauline Banks was named coach in November and will oversee the women's cross country and track & field teams. She comes from being the coach at Jackson State where she led her teams to three SWAC championships in the last two years. She is the first female track coach at Texas Southern University.
